Hotel Pension Funk: Where Silent Film Glamour Meets Charlottenburg

The boutique hotel on the venerable Fasanenstraße, not far from Kurfürstendamm, recalls the era of poets, actors, and breathtaking nightlife. The house was built in 1895. The 14 rooms and the large breakfast salon once formed the apartment of Danish silent film diva Asta Nielsen, who lived in the capital of the former empire until 1937. Her salons, hosting artists like Joachim Ringelnatz or actor Heinrich George, were the center of Berlin’s intellectual life. The house is thus a living time capsule.

For over twenty years, Michael Pfundt has managed the guesthouse in Berlin-Charlottenburg and has been able to preserve much of the original interior of the city apartment located on the ‘beletage’. Many original details are still visible today, including decoratively designed ceilings and finely crafted Art Nouveau windows. No two rooms are alike, which gives the house its unique character.

Breakfast in Nielsen’s Salon

The large breakfast salon, where guests today energize themselves before exploring the city, was formerly Nielsen’s salon. In the morning, guests can expect a hot and cold buffet with muesli and fresh fruit. There are deliberately no TVs in the rooms: The hotel consistently adheres to the style of the 1920s and foregoes modern electronics, creating a true sense of time travel.

The Uhlandstraße subway station is only 200 meters away, making the city easily accessible from here. The Käthe Kollwitz Museum is just a five-minute walk away. Hotel Pension Funk is aimed at travelers who not only want to visit Berlin’s history but also want to stay within it.
