Hotel Zoo Berlin on Kurfürstendamm in Charlottenburg is Berlin's elegant answer to the design boutique hotel: an 1891 Gründerzeit building, reinterpreted by US designer Dayna Lee, with 141 rooms, a legendary bar, and a rooftop terrace that showcases Berlin's rooftops on one level.

Hotel Zoo Berlin: Where History Meets Timeless Design

Right on Ku’damm in Charlottenburg stands a building that has made Berlin hotel history. Built in 1891 as the private residence of a wealthy family, it was transformed into an upscale hotel in 1911. Later, it became a meeting point for the film world: between the 1950s and 1970s, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, Hildegard Knef, and Romy Schneider stayed here. Today, the building shines brighter than ever. A thorough renovation by American designers Dayna Lee and Ted Berner has given the hotel a completely reimagined interior design, while the facade and basic structure have been lovingly preserved.

The result is consistent: modern furnishings and electronics exist side by side with classically inspired furniture and an aesthetic that explicitly recalls the Roaring Twenties, enriched with Old Hollywood and pre-war Manhattan influences. The over one-hundred-year-old floor plan combined with newly constructed levels in the side and rear buildings creates an exceptional architectural mix, reflected in the many different room layouts. Some rooms have open bathrooms, others freestanding bathtubs. The panoramic rooms offer views of Kurfürstendamm or over Berlin’s rooftops towards the Theater des Westens.

Grace Bar, Fine Dining and Berlin’s Most Beautiful Rooftop Terrace

Those who come just for a drink are also spot on. The GRACE Bar revives the glamour of the Roaring Twenties, in the same hotel where film stars like Marlene Dietrich once drank champagne and danced the Charleston. Exposed brick walls, green leather armchairs, purple wall panels, an amethyst bar counter, and a mirrored backboard create the feeling of an old Hollywood film set. Accompanying this is the GRACE Restaurant: Designed in the style of a New York townhouse, Dayna Lee’s interculturally influenced interior enchants as much as the Asian-European cuisine.

Those also seeking the Berlin evening sky will find it on the seventh floor. Accessible via the seventh floor, the rooftop terrace offers a lounge, a bar area, and the GRACE Garden, where every sunset becomes an experience with cocktails and champagne. The view encompasses a breathtaking 270-degree panorama of the Berlin skyline, with the southwest-facing view offering spectacular sunsets. Thus, Hotel Zoo Berlin is not just an accommodation on Ku’damm, but one of the most atmospheric design addresses in the entire city.
