Blanket out, unpack the basket, look at the water and enjoy: A picnic on the Spree riverbank or Landwehr Canal in Kreuzberg is the most relaxed first date Berlin has to offer. No reservation, no dress code question, no time limit, just you and nature.

Picnic by the Water – Is That Even Possible in Berlin?

Oh yes! Berlin is a picnic city. 44 kilometers of the Spree flow through the capital, and countless picturesque picnic spots can be found on both sides of the river. So, whoever packs a blanket and a basket is literally spoiled for choice. The banks around Kreuzberg and Treptow are particularly popular. Along the Landwehr Canal in Kreuzberg, you can walk, cycle, or even go by rubber boat. Couples cuddle on the walls, lovers share an ice cream or a glass of wine, and in the evening, the pink sunset transforms the canal into a postcard-perfect scene. If you prefer to head towards Treptow, Treptower Park offers another great option. Located directly on the Spree, you can also rent a boat here and take a spin before relaxing on your blanket again. It gets even more romantic on the Island of Youth, which lies in the middle of the Spree and is accessible via the old Abteibrücke bridge from Treptower Park. Under shady trees, you can picnic directly by the water, enjoy the river view, and often live music drifts over from the open-air stage. If you don’t want to pack your own picnic basket: At the Oderstraße entrance of Tempelhofer Feld, there’s Picnic Berlin, a rental service for fully equipped picnic baskets starting from 10 Euros.

Why is a Picnic by the Water a Great Spot for a First Date?

A first date has a decisive advantage when it takes place outdoors: The scenery works for you. A romantic picnic offers the opportunity to talk in peace and get to know each other better, and also to get a little closer if you like each other. No restaurant noise, no time pressure due to a reservation, no uncomfortable sitting opposite each other. Instead: the sound of water, evening light, and a blanket where you can simply stay as long as you want. Depending on the choice of food and drinks, the picnic can be customized and is much more private than a meeting in a restaurant. Furthermore, a self-packed basket shows effort, and effort makes an impression. Small, delicate finger food is better suited than dishes that require knives and forks. If you want to extend the date a bit: A kayak tour through Kreuzberg shows Berlin from its quietest side, and after paddling, the green areas around Böcklerpark invite you to a relaxed picnic. And if the conversation is going so well that you don’t want to go home yet: Along the Landwehr Canal, there are numerous bars, cafés, restaurants, and Spätis. An evening in Berlin can hardly end more beautifully.
