In Charlottenburg, where Kantstraße has long been more than just a thoroughfare, one of Berlin's most remarkable boutique hotels is hidden behind a heavy iron gate. The Wilmina Hotel has transformed a listed women's prison from 1896 into a tranquil, family-run retreat that allows history to be felt without dwelling on it.

Wilmina Hotel: When History Becomes Your Host

The historically preserved ensemble of a former courthouse and a women’s prison was redesigned, expanded, and repurposed by architects Grüntuch Ernst. The approach was consistently respectful: former prison walls were opened, daylight was captured, and green spaces were de-concreted. Windows, doors, and bricks that were no longer needed found new uses elsewhere. Thus, the building visibly carries its past without being overwhelmed by it. The establishment has already received recognition for this: the award-winning architectural transformation won 1st place at the BDA Architecture Prize 2022 and 1st place at the Berlin Architecture Prize 2023.

The rooms, for which two or more former cells were combined, are simple, bright, and furnished with high quality. They also feature pressed leaves and flowers that bring a piece of nature indoors, and natural materials, from simple wooden furniture to beds by COCO-MAT. This individual boutique hotel with only 44 rooms and suites offers an atmosphere that is unparalleled in Berlin.

Lovis, Rooftop and Wilmina Brot: The Culinary Heart

Guests staying at Wilmina should also keep the culinary offerings on their radar. In the in-house restaurant Lovis, head chef Sophia Rudolph defines contemporary German cuisine, reinterpreting traditional dishes with regional and seasonal ingredients. Additionally, the Wilmina Brot bakery supplies fresh bread for the hotel’s restaurants as well as a selection of baked goods. Early risers are rewarded at breakfast: the bread comes from the hotel’s own bakery, accompanied by fresh local fruits and vegetables.

There’s also plenty to discover beyond the plate. Guests can enjoy a rooftop pool, spa facilities, sauna, fitness center, and a sun terrace. Furthermore, the hotel houses Amtsalon, a multidisciplinary space for exhibitions, collaborations, and creative projects. In short: The Wilmina is an individual boutique hotel in Berlin that offers much more than just a beautiful room.
