SO/Berlin Das Stue

In the embassy district of Tiergarten, directly on the edge of the Zoological Garden, SO/Berlin Das Stue resides in a listed building from the 1930s. The boutique hotel combines historic architecture with an interior by Patricia Urquiola and a spa by Susanne Kaufmann to create one of Berlin's most atmospheric city hotels.
SO/Berlin Das Stue: A Living Room with History
“Stue” is the Danish word for living room, and the building was indeed once the Royal Danish Embassy. So, those who check in do not get an ordinary hotel room, but rather step into a history spanning almost nine decades. The curved grey clinker facade was designed by Johann Emil Schaudt, the architect of KaDeWe, and was built between 1938 and 1940. Thus, the building makes a statement even from the outside. Inside, Patricia Urquiola designed an interior that oscillates between black and white photographs of fashion and art, playful sofas, and animal sculptures. The latter are a discreet nod to the adjacent Zoological Garden. The original travertine stairs in the lobby were elaborately restored and lead up to secluded alcoves that invite guests to linger. In total, the hotel offers 78 rooms and suites, many of which offer views of the Tiergarten or the Berlin skyline.
Spa, Bar, and Private Zoo Access
What sets the individual boutique hotel SO/Berlin Das Stue apart from other luxury addresses in Berlin is the sum of its parts. Especially in the warmer months, the summer terrace with views of the Tiergarten is a major draw, and hotel guests enjoy an exclusive private entrance to the Zoological Garden. The hotel’s own spa was created in cooperation with Susanne Kaufmann and offers high-quality treatments as well as an indoor pool. Facilities also include a 14-meter indoor pool, a glass Finnish sauna, and a modern fitness area. The hotel also sets clear culinary standards: At the Carte Blanche restaurant, guests can expect an elegant brasserie atmosphere with French classics. The Stue Bar, in turn, impresses with its “Old Berlin” lounge character, creative cocktails, live music, and a large selection of whisky and vermouth. Located in Tiergarten, Das Stue is a quiet luxury hotel that, instead of flashy glamour, opts for its own understated character.
